GreenBox no. 13: Willie jean Peters memorial community garden

history preserved, history in the making

Peters Park is one of a host of historically Black neighborhoods throughout the Atlanta Metropolitan area. Sited in Tucker, just down the road from historic William McKinley Peters Park, Willie Jean Peters Memorial Community Garden was once the beating heart of the community, with Wille Jean Peters hosting weekly produce markets and get-togethers that brought together neighbors near and far. With your support, this site will once again bring the community together!

The plot, now owned by Willie Jean's grand-daughter, had become a bit much to take care of alone, and so with the help of DeKalb Habitat for Humanity, the Tucker High School Habitat Club, and a generous grant from State Farm, GreenBox set about restoring the native beauty of the site

The Plan

Started in Spring of 2024, this project has taken the considerable support of 100's of hours of volunteer time, over 20 cubic yards of mulch, and around 50 pollinator plants to get the initial foundation started.

The area has been cleared, and several beds have been established inside the historic walled garden area. Lots of perennial pollinators, a fig and pomegranate tree, and lots of annual veggie seeds have been planted, and weekly maintenance visits are already underway. A greenhouse has been built, with plans to grow seed starts for the Fall planting season. We also plan to build a shed to hold equipment, and provide refreshments ot the neighborhood during the hot summer months.

One of our immediate summer projects is building a combined grape and luffa arbor with seating, as well as ensuring the summer crop comes up and is donated to local food banks.
